Regions in France.

Loire Valley, France

The wines of the Loire Valley come from the North to North-central France.  The majority of the wines from this region are white from the Chenin blanc, Sauvignon blanc and Melon de Bourgogne grapes.  However, they do produce very nice rose and  dessert wines.  The Loire is the second largest sparkling wine region of France, behind the Champagne.  The fresh crisp and fruity flavors of the grapes of this region are ideal for sparkling and dessert wines.  Wine has been produced here back in the first century when Romans planted the first vineyards here.  In the High Middle Ages the Loire wine was even more cherished than wine from Bordeaux.  The warm microclimate caused by the Loire river protects the grapes from severe cold.   The main grapes of the Loire are the Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc, Cabernet franc, and the Melon de Bourgogne variety.
