Rhone, France

The Rhone wines in Southern France were established around 600 BC.  The dominant, but not the only grape in this region is the Syrah, which is thought to have origionated in the Rhone.   While the Southern Rhone has a warmer Mediterranean climate, you will  The varying terrain produces a variety of 'microclimates' which account for the variety in flavor for the Rhone wines.  The dominant grape in the Southern Rhone is the Grenache.  The southern Rhone's most prized red wine, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, may be created by blending up to a dozen different varieties of grapes.  You will often find smooth stones and pebbles around the base of the grape vines.  The pebbles absorb the heat from the sun during the day and keep the vines warm at night - as it often gets cool at night. The red wines of the Rhone region are known for their full bodied taste rich in tannins with aromas of prune, chocolate and fresh fruit.
